Broader choices, 30% cheaper, admitted in two weeks: why Rohan switched to Unlimit

An operations manager from Mumbai with six years’ experience, a shortlist of two MBAs priced above £60,000, and a feeling he hadn’t seen his real options. This example journey shows how a wider, like-for-like comparison led to a one-year UK MBA for about 30% less.

The short answer

  • Program: the full-time Durham MBA, one year in person from September 2027. £41,000, the same for UK and international students.
  • 30% cheaper: with nine months of UKVI living costs added, Durham came to £51,539 against £73,039 for the cheaper of his two original options (Warwick’s 12-month MBA at £62,500). Tuition alone was 34% lower.
  • The bar: at least three years’ continuous post-graduation work with significant managerial responsibility, an Indian bachelor’s with 55–65% depending on the institution, and an interview on Microsoft Teams.
  • Two weeks: in this example the offer arrived about two weeks after he applied. Decision times vary by school and time of year, so treat that as an example, not a promise.

Rohan’s profile

RohanMumbai · aiming for September 2027
Illustrative
Background
B.Com, Mumbai, 62%. Six years at a logistics company, the last three as an operations manager leading a team of 14.
Scores
IELTS Academic 7.0. No GMAT.
Budget
About ₹75 lakh all in: his savings plus an education loan.
Goals
A one-year MBA to move into strategy or operations leadership, then work in the UK for a while or come back to India.

Why he switched

Rohan had spent two months with a walk-in agency. He had a shortlist of two MBAs, both above £60,000 in fees, and each question took about a week to answer. Nobody could tell him why those two and not others.

Unlimit works differently. Matching, shortlisting and counselling are free for students. Universities pay us when a student enrols, and that never changes which universities we recommend. So the first thing his counsellor did was widen the list, then put every option side by side on the same costs.

Like for like: the cost comparison

Brochure fees aren’t comparable on their own: London needs more living money on paper than the rest of the UK. This table adds the living costs the Home Office asks Student visa applicants to show for nine months.

MBA (2027 entry)TuitionLiving, 9 monthsTotalINR (approx.)
Imperial College Business School (London)£81,000£13,761£94,761₹1.21 crore
Warwick Business School, 12-month format£62,500£10,539£73,039₹92.9 lakh
Durham University Business School£41,000£10,539£51,539₹65.6 lakh
Lancaster University Management School£34,000£10,539£44,539₹56.7 lakh

Living costs are UKVI’s minimums: £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months. A one-year MBA runs twelve, so budget for the extra months. Rupee figures at ₹127 = £1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 30 October 2026). Warwick’s fee is for 2027/28; Imperial’s, Durham’s and Lancaster’s are their published 2027 fees.

The shortlist, and why

  • AmbitiousUniversity of WarwickKept from his old list. A strong school, worth one application if the budget could stretch.
  • TargetDurham UniversityHis choiceA twelve-month, in-person MBA at £41,000. It asks for real managerial responsibility, which his last three years gave him.
  • TargetLancaster UniversityThe lowest fee on the list at £34,000, with scholarships of up to 50% of fees advertised for September 2027. IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each part, and no application fee for 2027 entry.
  • TargetUniversity of BirminghamDoesn’t require the GMAT. It asks for at least three years’ experience and usually expects five; he has six.
  • SafeUniversity of StrathclydeGlasgow. Three years’ full-time experience, a minimum age of 24 and IELTS 6.5; the GMAT isn’t a standard requirement.

Imperial was dropped: at £81,000 plus London living costs it was more than his whole budget. Safe, Target and Ambitious are our estimates for this profile, not the universities’ own labels.

Week by week

  1. Week 1A wider list in two minutesHe fills in the finder (MBA, UK, his score and budget) and gets a ranked list. A counsellor messages him within 24 hours, and his first request is the cost table above.
  2. Week 2No GMAT detourNone of his final schools needed it: Strathclyde says it isn’t a standard requirement, Birmingham says it doesn’t require it, and Durham’s and Lancaster’s MBA pages don’t list it. That saves him months.
  3. Weeks 2–3A CV about management, not tasksDurham wants significant managerial responsibility, so his CV leads with the team he runs, the budget he owns and what changed because of him. His manager agrees to write his reference.
  4. Week 4Applications inDurham and Lancaster first, then Birmingham and Strathclyde.
  5. Week 5InterviewDurham’s selection includes an interview on Microsoft Teams. He practises with his counsellor the evening before.
  6. Week 6OfferDurham’s offer arrives about two weeks after he applied. Lancaster’s scholarship decision is still open, and he weighs the two side by side before accepting Durham.
  7. After acceptingDeposit and CASHe pays the deposit set out in his offer and receives his Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
  8. March–July 2027VisaTB test at an approved clinic, 28 days of funds in the bank, then the Student visa application. You can apply up to 6 months before the course starts, and decisions usually take about 3 weeks.
  9. September 2027DurhamThe MBA starts.

Documents he needed

  • Passport.
  • Degree certificate and mark sheets for his B.Com.
  • CV and essays, with managerial experience front and centre.
  • Reference from his manager.
  • IELTS Academic score report.
  • Offer letter and CAS.
  • Proof of funds: unpaid first-year tuition plus £10,539 for living costs. Money in a bank account has to be held for 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before he applies.
  • TB test certificate (India is on the list; valid for 6 months from the X-ray).

What his year costs

ItemGBPINR (approx.)
Tuition, Durham MBA (September 2027)41,000₹52.2 lakh
Student visa, applying from outside the UK558₹71,000
Immigration Health Surcharge, per year of visa776₹98,700
Living costs, 9 months at UKVI’s outside-London figure10,539₹13.4 lakh
Total, before flights, the TB test and three extra months of living52,873₹67.3 lakh

The health surcharge depends on the length of the visa, which is usually a few months longer than the course, so the exact amount is calculated when you apply.

The Student visa, for an MBA

  • Fees: £558 to apply from outside the UK, plus £776 a year for the health surcharge.
  • Work: up to 20 hours a week during term, full time outside term.
  • Family: an MBA is a taught master’s, so students on courses starting from 1 January 2024 can’t bring dependants. If you’re married and want your spouse with you during the course, plan around that before you apply.
  • After the MBA: the Graduate visa is 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027 (it was 2 years before). It costs £937, plus a health surcharge of £1,035 a year.

What made the difference

  1. Comparing like for like. Fees plus the living money the visa asks for, in one table, in rupees.
  2. Looking past the names he’d heard of. Five schools instead of two, across different fees and odds.
  3. Matching evidence to the requirement. Durham asks for managerial responsibility, so that’s what his CV led with.
  4. Skipping a test nobody asked for. No GMAT meant applying weeks sooner.
  5. Having everything ready. When the interview invitation came, there was nothing left to chase.

Is this you?

This route suits you if most of these are true:

  • You have three or more years of work with real managerial responsibility.
  • You want a one-year MBA in the UK starting September 2027.
  • Your budget is closer to ₹75 lakh all in than ₹1 crore.
