The short answer
- Most university applicants need IELTS Academic. IELTS for UKVI has the same content but is taken under UK Home Office rules. You mainly need it for UK courses below degree level.
- In India, IELTS is delivered by IDP. As of October 2026, IDP India lists ₹19,000 for IELTS on computer and ₹19,250 for IELTS for UKVI.
- The test takes 2 hours 45 minutes. IELTS says computer results usually arrive within 1 to 5 days.
- IELTS recommends that organisations accept results for up to two years. If one section lets you down, One Skill Retake lets you resit just that section within 60 days.
- Planning to work in Canada after you graduate? The post-graduation work permit asks for IELTS General Training, not Academic.
What the IELTS Academic test looks like
IELTS Academic has four sections. Listening, Reading and Writing are taken in one sitting. Speaking is a conversation with an examiner and is sometimes scheduled on a different day.
| Section | Time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | About 30 minutes | Answer questions on recorded conversations and talks |
| Reading | 60 minutes | Answer questions on academic-style texts |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Two tasks: describe visual information, then write an essay |
| Speaking | 11 to 14 minutes | A face-to-face conversation with an examiner |
How the band score works
Each section gets a band from 0 to 9. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.5 average 6.25, which becomes an overall 6.5.
IELTS Academic or IELTS for UKVI?
IDP says the two tests are exactly the same in content. The difference is how they are run. IELTS for UKVI must be taken at an official test centre under Home Office security rules. Online IELTS is Academic only, and the Writing on Paper option isn’t available for UKVI.
Which one you need depends on your course and destination:
| Your plan | Which IELTS |
|---|---|
| UK degree-level course (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD) at a university | The university can assess your English itself, at CEFR level B2 or above. It decides which tests it accepts, and IELTS Academic is a common choice. Check its English page. |
| UK course below degree level, such as a foundation or some pathway courses | Usually a Home Office-approved test (a SELT) at B1 or above, such as IELTS for UKVI, unless you’re exempt |
| USA | IELTS Academic, if your university accepts it. Each university sets its own minimum. |
| Canada, for admission and the study permit | Whatever your college or university asks for. IRCC leaves the English requirement to the school. |
| Canada, for the PGWP after you graduate | IELTS General Training (or CELPIP-General, PTE Core, TEF Canada or TCF Canada), not IELTS Academic |
For the PGWP, university graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills. IRCC says that’s 6.0 in each section of IELTS General Training. College graduates need CLB 5. If Canada is your plan, read our Canada overview and study permit guide.
On computer, Writing on Paper or paper?
- IELTS on computer: you take Listening, Reading and Writing on a computer at a test centre. Results usually arrive within 1 to 5 days.
- IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper: Listening and Reading are on screen, but you write by hand. Results come within five days. This option isn’t available for UKVI.
- IELTS on paper: IELTS announced in March 2026 that it will stop offering the paper test worldwide from mid-2026. IDP India’s fee page now says paper IELTS has been discontinued in India.
- IELTS Online: Academic only, taken at home where it’s offered. It can’t be used for UKVI, so check that your university accepts it before booking.
Booking IELTS in India and what it costs
IDP has delivered every IELTS test in India since 25 July 2021, when it took over from the British Council. You can book on IDP’s India website or at an IDP branch.
| Item | Fee (IDP India, October 2026) |
|---|---|
| IELTS on computer (Academic or General Training) | ₹19,000 |
| IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper | ₹19,000 |
| IELTS for UKVI | ₹19,250 |
| One Skill Retake | ₹12,650 |
| Changing your test date (transfer) | ₹4,750 (computer) · ₹4,850 (UKVI) |
| Enquiry on Results (remark) | ₹14,250 · ₹14,400 for UKVI |
Results, validity and remarks
IELTS recommends that organisations accept results for a maximum of two years. For UK visa purposes, gov.uk says a SELT is valid for two years from the date it’s awarded. Universities can set a shorter window, so check that your score will still be valid on the date they ask for.
If you think a section was marked too low, you can request an Enquiry on Results within six weeks of your test date. IDP India says the fee is refunded if your score changes, and the outcome usually takes two to three weeks, sometimes up to four.
One Skill Retake: resitting one section
If you fell short in just one section, One Skill Retake lets you resit Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking instead of the whole test. The rules, per IELTS:
- Your full test must have been IELTS on computer.
- You must take the retake within 60 days of the full test, and only once per test.
- If you took Writing on Paper, you retake Writing in the same mode.
IDP India offers it for ₹12,650. Acceptance is the catch. IELTS says the UK Home Office accepts One Skill Retake in selected locations, but IDP India’s own terms from 2024 said the results couldn’t be used for UKVI. If you need IELTS for UKVI, ask IDP in writing before you book. For university admissions, IELTS’s advice is to check with each organisation directly.
Which test, and what score?
IELTS isn’t the only option. Most universities in the US, UK and Canada also list other tests, and the right one depends on your destination and plans after graduating. Compare the alternatives in our TOEFL guide and PTE Academic guide.
For target scores, look at the courses themselves. Our guide to UK data science Master’s that accept IELTS 6.0 shows how requirements differ, and you can filter thousands of courses by country in Explore programs. If you’re aiming for January, see where you can still get a UK offer in time.
