The short answer
- Program: MSc Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence at Alliance Manchester Business School, one year full time from September 2027. (Until 2026 it was called MSc Business Analytics: Operational Research and Risk Analysis.)
- The bar: a First or 2:1 (60% average) in a quantitative subject; for Indian degrees the school asks for 60–70% depending on the institution. English: IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5.
- The five weeks: her first mock test gave writing 6.0. She spent five weeks mostly on writing and sat the test with 7.0 overall and 6.5 in writing.
- Cost: £35,700 tuition (the September 2026 fee; 2027 fees aren’t set yet). About £47,600 (₹60.6 lakh) for the year with visa and UKVI’s minimum living costs.
Mitali’s profile

- Background
- B.Sc. in Statistics from a Pune college, 71%. One year as a junior analyst at a market research firm.
- Scores
- No English test yet. Class 12 English: 78%. First IELTS mock: 6.5 overall, writing 6.0.
- Budget
- About ₹65 lakh for the year: an education loan plus her parents’ savings.
- Goals
- A one-year master’s that turns her statistics into a business analytics career, starting September 2027.
- Why she reached out
- She knew her degree was a good fit for analytics. She didn’t know whether her English score would hold her back, or how much time she had.
The shortlist, and why
The finder gave her a ranked list in about two minutes. Her counsellor helped her trim it to five, keeping one stretch and one backup.
- AmbitiousUniversity of WarwickThe most selective option on her list by our estimate. One application, no expectations.
- TargetUniversity of ManchesterHer choiceA course built for a quantitative degree like hers, in a big city outside London, so living costs on paper are lower.
- TargetUniversity of LeedsA similar level to Manchester by our estimate, so two good chances rather than one.
- TargetUniversity of BirminghamAnother strong target, with a different application timeline to spread the risk.
- SafeNottingham Trent UniversityHer marks clear our estimated level comfortably. Her backup if English went badly.
Safe, Target and Ambitious are our estimates for this profile, not the universities’ own labels. A counsellor confirms every requirement on the university’s page.
The English problem, precisely
Manchester’s business school asks for IELTS 7.0 overall and no element below 6.5. That second half is where many applicants slip: an overall 7.0 with a 6.0 in writing still misses.
Before booking anything, her counsellor checked the other route. The school accepts Class 12 English (CBSE English Core or ISC) at 85% or above in place of a test. Mitali had 78%, so that door was closed, and IELTS it was.
Her mock test said everything else was fine. Writing was the only band at risk, so the plan put most of five weeks there.
Week by week
- Week 1Shortlist, call, diagnosisShe fills in the finder, gets her shortlist, and a counsellor messages her within 24 hours. On the call they look at the English rule line by line, rule out the Class 12 route and book an IELTS Academic test for the end of week 5.
- Weeks 1–5Writing, every dayOne Task 1 a day (describing a chart or table, which is an analyst’s daily work anyway) and one Task 2 essay every other day, marked against the official band descriptors. A full timed mock each weekend.
- Weeks 2–4The application, in parallelShe drafts her statement of purpose and lists the quantitative modules on her transcript (statistics, probability, linear algebra, calculus) with marks, because the school says mathematical modules are essential. She asks her referees early.
- Week 5Test dayShe sits IELTS Academic.
- Weeks 6–77.0, with 6.5 in writingWith the result in hand she submits her Manchester application (£60 fee) and the rest of her shortlist the same week.
- By the stage dateDecisionManchester’s business school runs staged deadlines and aims to update applicants by each stage’s date, though it says it can’t always give a final decision by then. Her offer is conditional on her final transcript.
- OfferDeposit and CASShe pays the £2,500 deposit by the date in her offer letter (it comes off her tuition), meets the conditions, and receives her Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- March–July 2027VisaA TB test at an approved clinic, 28 days of funds in the bank, then the visa application. The earliest you can apply is 6 months before the course starts, and decisions usually take about 3 weeks.
- September 2027ManchesterThe course starts.
| Stage | Application received by | Update by |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 December 2026 | 19 February 2027 |
| 2 | 1 March 2027 | 2 May 2027 |
| 3 | 4 May 2027 | 18 June 2027 |
| 4 | 4 July 2027 | 30 July 2027 |
| 5 | 23 August 2027 | 31 August 2027 |
Documents she needed
- Passport.
- Transcripts and degree certificate, with the quantitative modules easy to find.
- IELTS Academic result: 7.0 overall, nothing below 6.5.
- Statement of purpose, CV and references.
- Offer letter and CAS from Manchester.
- Proof of funds: any unpaid first-year tuition plus £1,171 a month for 9 months (£10,539). Money in a bank account has to be held for 28 days in a row, with that period ending no more than 31 days before she applies. Her education loan letter covered the rest.
- TB test certificate from an approved clinic. India is on the list, and the certificate is valid for 6 months from the X-ray.
Her course doesn’t need ATAS clearance: that scheme covers certain science and technology subjects, not business courses.
What it costs
| Item | GBP | INR (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition (September 2026 fee; 2027 not yet set) | 35,700 | ₹45.4 lakh |
| Application fee | 60 | ₹7,600 |
| Student visa, applying from outside the UK | 558 | ₹71,000 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge, per year of visa | 776 | ₹98,700 |
| Living costs, 9 months at UKVI’s outside-London figure (£1,171) | 10,539 | ₹13.4 lakh |
| Total, before flights, the TB test and IELTS | 47,633 | ₹60.6 lakh |
Rupee figures at ₹127 = £1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 30 October 2026). Your bank’s remittance rate will be a little worse. The health surcharge depends on the length of your visa, which is usually a few months longer than the course, so the exact amount is calculated when you apply. UKVI’s living-cost figure is the minimum to show on paper, not what a Manchester flat will cost.
The Student visa
- Fee: £558 from outside the UK, plus the health surcharge of £776 per year.
- Money: £1,171 a month for up to 9 months outside London (£1,529 in London), on top of unpaid tuition, held for 28 days in a row.
- Timing: apply up to 6 months before the course starts; a decision usually takes about 3 weeks.
- Work: up to 20 hours a week during term for degree-level students, full time in the holidays.
- Family: students on taught master’s courses that start from 1 January 2024 can’t bring dependants.
- After the course: the Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply by 31 December 2026, but 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. Mitali would apply in 2028, so she’d get 18 months. It costs £937 plus a health surcharge of £1,035 a year.
What made the difference
- Reading the English rule exactly. “No element below 6.5” told her which band to work on. Five weeks of general practice would have been five weeks spread too thin.
- Checking the free route first. The Class 12 English route didn’t apply to her, but it takes five minutes to check and saves many students a test fee.
- Showing the maths, not just the degree name. The school wants quantitative modules, so her application put them where a reader would see them.
- Applying to the right course. The course was renamed for 2026. Her counsellor made sure she applied to MSc Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, not an old listing.
- Planning the visa money early. Savings used as proof have to sit in the account for 28 days in a row, ending within 31 days of the application, so the family moved money in good time instead of the week before.
Is this you?
This route suits you if most of these are true:
- Your degree is in maths, statistics, physics, economics or engineering, with quantitative modules and 60–70% or more.
- Your IELTS is within reach of 7.0 with no band below 6.5, or your CBSE or ISC Class 12 English was 85% or above.
- You want a one-year master’s in the UK starting September 2027.
