From a tier-3 college to UBC: Arjun’s shortlist that actually worked

A computer science graduate from a college that rarely sends anyone abroad, a family budget that ruled out a big loan, and a research project he was proud of. This example journey shows why a funded, thesis-based MSc was the right target, and how he built an application around it.

Does a tier-3 college hold you back?

Not on paper. UBC’s published minimum for Indian degrees is about the class of your degree, not your college’s name: a four-year bachelor’s with First Class / Division 1 (65%) or Very Good (8 out of 10). Arjun’s 8.1 clears it.

Clearing the minimum gets you read. For a research master’s, what lifts an application above the pile is evidence you can do research: what you’ve already built, how clearly you write about the problems you want to work on, and references from people who watched you do it. That evidence doesn’t depend on where you studied, and it’s where Arjun put his effort.

Why thesis-based changed the mathsA course-based master’s in Canada is usually paid for by the student. A thesis-based MSc at a department like UBC Computer Science comes with a guaranteed minimum funding package. For a family that couldn’t borrow heavily, that was the whole case for aiming high.

The shortlist, and why

Every program on his list was research-based, so the list was built around two questions: is there work here close to his project, and when is the deadline?

  • AmbitiousUniversity of British ColumbiaHis choiceTwo-year thesis MSc, guaranteed minimum funding, no GRE, and no need to contact supervisors before applying.
  • TargetUniversity of AlbertaAnother research master’s in Western Canada, with its own faculty list to check against his project.
  • TargetUniversity of CalgaryA research option at a level his grades meet by our estimate.
  • TargetSimon Fraser UniversityIn greater Vancouver too, with its own deadline and faculty list to check.
  • SafeUniversity of VictoriaComfortably above our estimated entry level: the place he was most likely to get a research offer.

Safe, Target and Ambitious are our estimates from grades and English scores. For research programs, fit with a supervisor matters as much, so treat every label here with extra caution.

Week by week

UBC’s deadline for September 2027 is 15 December 2026, so a student starting in early November has about six weeks.

  1. Week 1The money conversationHe fills in the finder and a counsellor calls within 24 hours. Before any university names come up, they talk budget: a self-funded taught master’s would mean a loan his family didn’t want. A funded thesis MSc is the plan.
  2. Weeks 1–2Reading faculty pagesFor each university he reads the research pages of the computer science department and notes three or four faculty whose recent work is close to code-mixed language or low-resource NLP. UBC says applicants don’t need to contact faculty before applying; for the others, he checks each department’s own advice.
  3. Week 2References, earlyHe asks the professor who guided his project and his engineering manager, and sends them a one-page summary of what he’s applying for and why.
  4. Weeks 2–5Statement and CVThe statement explains the problem he worked on, what he’d do next, and whose work at each university it connects to. The CV leads with the project, the paper and the code, not the college.
  5. Week 6UBC submitted by 15 DecemberHe pays the CA$168.25 application fee and uploads transcripts before the 16 December transcript deadline.
  6. Early JanuaryReferees finishUBC Computer Science asks referees to submit by 6 January. UBC’s graduate school lists 15 January, so he works to the earlier date. His other applications go in by their own deadlines.
  7. OfferAn offer with fundingUBC doesn’t publish a decision date. His offer comes with a funding letter, and he accepts.
  8. After acceptingStudy permitUpfront medical exam, the online application with his letter of acceptance and proof of funds, then biometrics.
  9. September 2027VancouverThe program starts.

Documents he needed

  • Transcripts and degree certificate from his four-year degree.
  • IELTS Academic at 7.0 or more with 6.5 in each band. (For TOEFL iBT, UBC lists 5.0 overall on the new 1–6 scale for tests taken from 21 January 2026, or 100 on the old 120-point scale.)
  • Statement of research interest, CV and links to his work.
  • References from his project guide and his manager.
  • Letter of acceptance and funding letter from UBC.
  • Proof of funds for the permit: first-year tuition, CA$23,448 for living costs and travel. IRCC accepts proof of a scholarship; anything it doesn’t cover has to be shown separately, so he added his family’s bank statements.
  • Proof he doesn’t need a PAL: master’s students at a public university have been exempt since 1 January 2026.
  • Upfront medical exam (India is on IRCC’s list) and biometrics.

What it costs

ItemCADINR (approx.)
UBC application fee (international)168₹11,400
Tuition per year, as listed on UBC’s program page10,082₹6.9 lakh
Study permit ($150) and biometrics ($85)235₹16,000
Living costs per year, IRCC’s minimum23,448₹15.9 lakh
Funding: UBC Computer Science standard minimum per year, guaranteed for two years (2026-27)33,168₹22.5 lakh

Rupee figures at ₹68 = CA$1 (Bank of Canada daily rate, 30 October 2026). UBC also lists an International Tuition Award of CA$3,200 for eligible students. The department estimates that a first-year international MSc student takes home about CA$30,467 after tuition and fees; it says its figures may be adjusted, and 2027-28 rates aren’t published yet. Funding can include teaching or research assistant work, so read your own offer letter for the details.

The study permit

  • No PAL needed for a master’s at a public university starting from 1 January 2026, but you must show you qualify for the exception.
  • Proof of funds: first-year tuition plus CA$23,448 (for applications from 1 September 2026) plus travel.
  • Fees: CA$150 for the permit and CA$85 for biometrics.
  • Medical: needed for applicants who have lived in India for six months or more in the year before travelling.
  • Work: up to 24 hours a week off campus in term, unlimited in scheduled breaks.
  • After graduating: up to 3 years on a post-graduation work permit, no field-of-study requirement for master’s graduates, and CLB 7 in English in all four skills.
  • If you’re married: a two-year master’s meets the 16-month rule for a spouse’s open work permit.

What made the difference

  1. A shortlist built on funding and fit. Every program could pay for itself, so aiming high didn’t mean betting the family’s savings.
  2. Evidence over pedigree. A finished project, a short paper and public code said more than the name on his degree certificate.
  3. Specific research interests. His statement named the problems he wanted to work on and whose work they connected to at each university.
  4. Respecting a December deadline. Six weeks is enough only if references are asked for in week two.
  5. No GRE detour. UBC doesn’t require it, so the weeks went into the statement instead.

Is this you?

This route suits you if most of these are true:

  • You have a four-year computer science degree with First Class (65%) or 8/10 and above, from any college.
  • You have research you can show: a project, a paper, public code.
  • You’d rather be funded than take on a large loan, and you can apply by 15 December 2026.
